Sensor degradation research for U.S. Navy to be done by GMATEK
ANNAPOLIS, Md. Artificial intelligence (AI) research and development firm GMATEK has been tapped by the U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) Program Executive Office – Unmanned and Small Combatants (PEO-USC) to perform research and development in multisensor fusion and analytics to detect, mitigate, and compensate for sensor degradation onboard unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) and unmanned undersea vehicles (UUVs).
Under the terms of the agreement with the Navy, GMATEK, according to a company statement, is applying machine learning and deep-learning AI technology to ensure that remotely operated and autonomous vehicles can operate reliably under adverse conditions and with increasing degrees of failure in sensor components and systems. Company officials say that among the goals of the project are maintaining the vehicle’s domain and situational awareness while optimizing reduced capabilities of internal vehicle systems. The project is also concentrating on development of a prototype system for test and evaluation in relevant conditions subsea, surface, and airborne sensors.
Project subcontracator FarSounder (Warwick, Rhode Island) will be involved on the project as well, adding its experience in sonar and related systems.
Work under the project accord is slated to be performed at the GMATEK facilities in Annapolis.
